Nigeria has reaffirmed its position as Africa's banking powerhouse, with six financial institutions featuring among the continent's ten largest banks by customer base.
According to the latest customer figures shared by BusinessDay, Access Bank tops the list with an impressive 60 million customers, making it the largest bank in Africa by customer numbers.
Trailing behind are OPay and United Bank for Africa (UBA), each serving 45 million customers, highlighting the rapid rise of digital banking alongside traditional financial institutions. Ethiopia's Commercial Bank of Ethiopia follows closely with 44.9 million customers, while FirstBank rounds out the top five with 43 million customers.
The remaining banks in the top ten include PalmPay (40 million), Zenith Bank (36.7 million), Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) (32.8 million), South Africa's Capitec Bank (25 million), and Kenya's Equity Bank (22.7 million).
The rankings underscore Nigeria's growing influence in Africa's financial services sector, driven by aggressive expansion, digital innovation, financial inclusion initiatives, and a rapidly growing population. The strong showing of fintech companies such as OPay and PalmPay also reflects a shift in how millions of Africans now access banking services through mobile technology.
As competition intensifies across the continent, banks are increasingly investing in digital platforms, cross-border expansion, and customer-centric products to capture Africa's fast-growing banking market.
With customer acquisition becoming a key measure of market leadership, the latest rankings demonstrate that Nigeria remains at the forefront of shaping the future of banking in Africa.
