The directive prohibits serving officers from creating videos, livestreaming, posting skits, or monetizing content on platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and other social media channels without official approval.
According to a police circular, the new IGP expressed concern over the increasing trend of officers using social media for entertainment, personal branding, and financial gain while in police uniforms, warning that such actions could damage the image and professionalism of the Force.
The circular states that officers found violating the directive will face strict disciplinary measures, including immediate suspension from duty, forfeiture of salary, demotion, dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force, and, where applicable, criminal prosecution.
The directive also cautions officers against publicly commenting on official police operations, internal disciplinary matters, or other sensitive issues without authorization.
The police leadership said the move is aimed at strengthening discipline, professionalism, and public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force, stressing that all official communication should be handled through approved channels.
The new policy is expected to significantly reshape the online activities of police personnel as the Force seeks to tighten internal discipline and safeguard its institutional image.
