The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the development during a press briefing held in Ikeja, stating that the initiative is awaiting final approval from the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to the commissioner, the proposed licence scheme is expected to enhance traffic monitoring, strengthen driver identification systems and support the state’s broader smart mobility agenda. He noted that the rollout could commence within the coming weeks once executive approval is granted.
The move represents another step in Lagos State’s ongoing transportation reforms targeted at addressing traffic congestion, improving road discipline and modernising transport operations in Africa’s most populous city.
Industry observers say the initiative could also improve digital record-keeping, aid law enforcement agencies and create a more efficient framework for driver verification and vehicle regulation.
If successfully implemented, Lagos would become one of the few sub-national governments in Nigeria to operate a state-backed driver licensing framework in collaboration with federal authorities.
The development has already sparked conversations among motorists and transport stakeholders, many of whom see the initiative as a potential game changer in urban traffic management and road safety enforcement.
