The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has revealed that it now receives more than 450 domestic violence-related complaints every month, highlighting the growing prevalence of abuse cases across the state and the urgent need for stronger intervention mechanisms.
The disclosure was made by the Executive Secretary of the agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, during a stakeholders’ engagement and technical training organised by the Lagos State Command and Control Centre in Ikeja.
According to Vivour-Adeniyi, the agency records between 400 and 450 fresh cases monthly through its hotlines, social media platforms, online channels, and walk-in reports. She, however, noted that domestic and sexual violence remain significantly underreported despite the increasing number of complaints being received.
She explained that while the statistics may appear alarming, they also reflect growing public trust in the system and increased awareness among victims and survivors about available support channels.
“We know we’ve not scratched the surface because these issues remain some of the most underreported crimes globally, but we are encouraged that more people now have faith in the system,” she stated.
The DSVA boss further noted that more victims are now seeking help through emergency lines, agency offices, and digital platforms, signaling improved confidence in institutional response frameworks.
Stakeholders at the engagement stressed the importance of collaboration among government agencies, law enforcement bodies, healthcare professionals, community leaders, and civil society organisations in tackling domestic and sexual violence cases effectively.
The development comes amid increasing advocacy for stronger protection of vulnerable groups, enhanced survivor support services, and more aggressive public sensitisation campaigns across Lagos State.
Experts say improved reporting mechanisms, digital access to emergency services, and sustained awareness initiatives are contributing to the rise in reported cases, while also exposing the broader scale of gender-based violence in society.
As conversations around domestic violence continue to gain prominence, stakeholders have called for intensified prevention strategies, faster justice delivery, and expanded rehabilitation support for survivors.
