Nollywood faith-based blockbuster Agbara Nla: The Return has made a spectacular entrance at the box office, generating more than ₦71 million from its preview screenings and setting a new benchmark for preview sales.
The film, a contemporary reimagining of the iconic 1993 Christian classic, recorded 12,134 admissions during its preview run, underscoring the enduring strength of the Agbara Nla brand more than three decades after the original captivated audiences across Nigeria.
Distributed by Nile Entertainment, the new production has been described as recording the biggest single-day preview gross in West Africa and one of the strongest opening performances for a faith-based Nigerian film.
The achievement is particularly significant in an increasingly competitive Nigerian cinema market, where audience attention, strong intellectual property and effective distribution have become critical to theatrical success.
Produced within the Mount Zion filmmaking tradition, Agbara Nla: The Return brings the classic story into a contemporary setting while retaining the spiritual themes that made the original a landmark in Nigerian Christian filmmaking.
Veteran filmmaker Mike Bamiloye, who featured in the original production, returns as Isawuru, while the new generation of the Bamiloye filmmaking family Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua Bamiloye take on directing responsibilities.
The film’s performance also signals the growing commercial power of faith-based cinema in Nigeria, demonstrating that films built around strong community identity and established intellectual property can attract substantial theatrical audiences.
For an industry navigating changing audience habits, rising production costs and the growing importance of cinema revenues, Agbara Nla: The Return offers another compelling indication that Nigerian audiences will turn out in significant numbers for stories they connect with.
After 33 years, Agbara Nla has returned — and this time, the numbers are telling a very different box-office story.
