The warning follows a fresh flood advisory issued by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) covering September 19–25, 2026.
Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, urged residents in areas identified as vulnerable to take precautionary measures and avoid waiting until floodwaters become dangerous before moving to safer locations.
Among the areas identified as vulnerable are Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Oke-Ira Nla in Ajah, Kirikiri, Ilaje Waterfront Jetty and Jetty Terminal B.
The government also placed Isheri North, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun, Ogolonto and parts of Agboyi on heightened alert, particularly communities downstream of the Isheri Olofin area.
Early Action Urged
The state government is encouraging residents in affected communities to take the warning seriously and activate early-response measures.
Residents living close to rivers, lagoons, wetlands, drainage channels and other waterways have been advised to remain vigilant and comply with official safety directives.
Authorities also warned residents against attempting to walk or drive through floodwaters, which can conceal open drains, damaged roads and other hazards.
NiHSA's advisory further indicated that rising river levels could pose risks to vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure, including schools, healthcare facilities, markets, farms and places of worship.
