Nigeria and China are taking steps to strengthen collaboration in film, television and literature following the signing of a strategic agreement between the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and China Movie Channel (CMC).
The agreement, signed at the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria during the China–Nigeria Film and Literature Symposium, is expected to open new opportunities for content exchange, co-production, professional training and technology transfer between the two countries.
The partnership signals a growing interest in leveraging the creative industries as a platform for cultural diplomacy, economic cooperation and stronger people-to-people relations.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, said film and literature have an important role to play in promoting mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of both countries.
He noted that Nigeria and China share rich civilisational histories and vibrant creative industries, creating significant opportunities for deeper collaboration.
Under the new agreement, stakeholders are expected to explore the exchange of television and film content, joint productions, capacity-building programmes and the transfer of relevant technologies and expertise.
For Nigeria's creative sector, the partnership could provide additional avenues for Nigerian stories and talent to reach Chinese audiences, while also creating opportunities for Nigerian filmmakers, television professionals and other creatives to gain exposure to China's expansive media and entertainment ecosystem.
The agreement also comes at a time when Nigeria's creative economy is increasingly being recognised as a major contributor to employment, cultural influence and international engagement.
Beyond entertainment, the collaboration could strengthen cultural ties between Africa's largest economy and the world's second-largest economy, using storytelling as a bridge between two nations with diverse histories and rapidly evolving creative industries.
A New Chapter for Nigeria-China Cultural Exchange
As both countries continue to expand bilateral relations beyond traditional economic sectors, the film, television and literature industries are emerging as important avenues for cooperation.
The NTA-CMC agreement could therefore mark the beginning of a new chapter—one where Nigerian and Chinese creators collaborate not only to produce content, but also to build lasting cultural and commercial connections.
