The legendary actor, known for his commanding screen presence, powerful delivery, and unforgettable roles in classic Nollywood productions, received a standing ovation from guests and industry stakeholders during the glamorous award ceremony.
Speaking emotionally during his acceptance speech, Kanayo dedicated the honour to film practitioners across the continent, especially the pioneers and veterans whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the growth of Nollywood and African cinema.
“This is for Africa, for everyone who works as cast and crew,” he said. “Even before 1992, many of us are no longer in good health, many have returned to their villages, and many have passed on.”
The veteran actor reflected on the difficult journey of sustaining a career in the entertainment industry, noting that many pioneers paid enormous personal prices to keep the industry alive.
“Sometimes, when you stand on a stage like this, you ask yourself, ‘What have I done to still be alive?’ Yes, I have made a lot of sacrifices,” he added.
Kanayo also used the opportunity to condemn xenophobic violence in South Africa, urging Africans to embrace unity rather than hostility against fellow Africans living and working across borders.
His comments drew applause from guests and industry stakeholders at the ceremony, with many describing the speech as one of the most emotional and politically conscious moments of the night.
