Akpabio made this known while addressing party stakeholders at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Asaba, Delta State.
According to him, the push for Anioma State remains a priority under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasizing the Federal Government’s commitment to restructuring efforts aimed at addressing regional aspirations.
In a significant political proposition, Akpabio stated that while Asaba would serve as the capital of the proposed Anioma State, Warri would assume the role of capital of a restructured Delta State.
The Senate President noted that the move is part of broader efforts to ensure equity, balanced development, and administrative efficiency across the region. He also stressed the importance of stakeholder alignment and constitutional processes in actualizing the state creation.
The Anioma agitation, which has spanned decades, reflects longstanding demands by the Igbo-speaking communities in Delta North for greater political autonomy and representation.
However, analysts note that the creation of a new state in Nigeria involves a rigorous constitutional amendment process, requiring approval by the National Assembly, state legislatures, and a national referendum.
As conversations intensify, the proposal is expected to generate widespread political debate, particularly among stakeholders in Delta State and the broader South-South region.
